Chhim Sothy

Chhim Sothy is one of Cambodia’s most established contemporary painters, known for his ability to merge traditional Khmer visual culture with expressive contemporary painting techniques. Born in Kandal Province in 1969, Sothy belongs to the first post-war generation of Cambodian artists who helped rebuild the country’s contemporary art scene after the Khmer Rouge era. He studied at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh from 1985 to 1995, where he was trained in both traditional Khmer painting and modern artistic practices. (Cambodianess)
Deeply influenced by Cambodia’s social transformation, Sothy’s work reflects the tension between memory, urbanization, cultural identity, and human struggle. His paintings move fluidly between abstraction and figurative imagery, often combining gestural brushwork, layered textures, Khmer ornamental motifs, and emotionally charged scenes from everyday life.
